Generally, I only rec fics that I liked enough to save on my HD...And even then, maybe not all of those. I'm big on rereading stories that I like (I'm the same with novels), so if I think it was good enough that I'd read it again, I save it. These fics with reread potential are the ones you'll find recommended here. I'll read a lot of different genres, so it'd probably be easier to list the ones I don't like. I don't usually read horror, or pure angst (such as deathfics). I will read some angst; it's a kinda iffy genre for me...I can generally tolerate angst (within reason), as long as things turn out all right in the end. So, if you like uber-angsty fics that end on a heartbreaking note, you're out of luck; I don't often read/rec that type of fic. Also, I'm kinda picky about AUs. The sort that take a specific plot point and change it ("What would happen if [Character] didn't die?" or "What if [this] had gone differently?", etc), I'm usually okay with those. It depends on what's changed, of course, but on the whole, I'll often give them a chance. However, I usually avoid the sort that completely change the world/setting/history of things ("Van is a cowboy and Hitomi is a rancher's daughter.", etc.). If I'm craving Esca fic, I want to read about Hitomi (the psychic girl from Earth) and Van (the king of Fanelia), not whoever else the author thinks it'd be fun to turn them into. So if these are your thing, you're out of luck. And I'm a total sap, so expect a lot of romance recs. I'm kind of picky about my pairings, so I usually only read a pairing fic if it's one of my favorite pairings (see list below). Basically, if a 'ship isn't on that list, don't expect to see many recs for it. I can only think of a handful of fics that I've read, and liked enough to possibly rec, that are of pairings I don't support. So, that'll give you an idea of what to expect from the romance section. However, I hate offspring fic. So don't expect fic that deals with a couple getting pregnant, having a child, or some 'next gen' story about the child of canon characters. These are some things that bug me when done in fics. I try to avoid these things when reading, so my recs shouldn't contain many of them. Bad spelling/grammar/formatting * = This I can take or leave, depending on how bad it is, and how good the fic is. If the fic's otherwise good, I can usually just translate in my head. Now I'll admit, my tastes are pretty tame. I'm somewhat easily squicked, so I'll go ahead and list what I can think of. These are subjects that you can be pretty certain you won't find in fics I rec. Incest*
* = Incest is one of my big squicks, and I take it a bit farther than some do. This means that I consider things besides the usual sibling and parental relationships to be incest. Cousins, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, etc. Basically, if they're related at all, I'm not interested. ** = Now, I don't know what ages are generally considered shouta, but I'll just say that my cut-off age for participants in mature romantic relationships is 15-16 years old. I usually prefer them older, but that's the youngest I'll go. Also note that I'm not talking crushes and puppy love, I'm talking relationships with a serious physical aspect.
